Whenever I encounter a scammer on Craigslist, I'm going to post their email address here so the google bots will pick it up. If you are doing business on Craigslist and something or someone sounds too good to be true, google, google, google.

I actually replied and told her about my hobbies and stuff since it is a house share and she told me a little about herself. So, what do they do with that information? It's not like I gave anything too personal away, but it is creepy.

ReplyDeleteThis one is a car scam: I found a too good to be true deal on craigslist. I'm a skeptic so I received an invoice and instructions. I did some research, sent the invoice to spoofmail@ebay.....they confirmed it was not real, I then sent the person email with concern they were being scammed. I did not receive a reply, I sent another email that "yes, I did not think I would receive an answer to that."

Basically, what they do is send you a fake cashier's check for more than the agreed upon amount. Then you deposit the fake check and withdraw the overage amount to send back to them. They get real money, you don't. Then the bank, who didn't notice it was a fake check, tries to make you liable for the mistake, basically.

ReplyDeleteI just wrote a post on this scammer on Yahoo Questions and Answers. Chrisette Middleton uses other names as well. My conclusion is to never deal with anyone who says they are relocating. I only respond to local numbers now and never meet anyone in my home, never give out my information and when I callthem I turn off my caller ID so they cannot see my phone number.

Great information, Lalo. I didn't know I could report them to the FBI. So far, I've been pretty lucky in that the scammers are easy to spot and haven't caused me any trouble other than being annoying.
ReplyDeleteThese scammers need to be reported, they can be pfishing and stealing ID's or scamming people out of money. Report to the list of agencies listed on craigslist "about scams" page. All the links are there. Who knows how many people they are scamming. There are men doing it too:

ReplyDeleteCraigslist has a document about scammers that pretty much reminds you to only deal locally. I think that's the biggest thing right now. Don't give out your personal info and only deal with locals paying in cash.

About me ...I am half Brit from dad and half Asian from mum, am 29yrs old, a science teacher and divorced female, mostly spend my time in the laboratory experimenting, I am educated(undergraduate and post graduate degree), a good christian,very low key and relaxed to live with. I prefer cleanliness than any other traits, I'm honest, responsible, and hardworking while I dislike lazy, messy and uncaring people. I love pets so much though I don't have one, am a quiet and easy going person to live with. I always love to go on a date but seldom party. I swim for fun and sometimes play tennis, also I enjoy snowboarding. I must confess that I am comfortable with the price. I'll like to secure the place down pending my arrival.. I will also be shipping my things down to the States such as my Toyota Matrix (XL 2010)which I've been using for over 6 months now, and some personal effects. Don't worry am not bringing in furniture's as I will easily purchase upon arrive. Moreover, let me know how I can go about securing the place down before my arrival as I'll be busy this month preparing to come over as soon as the room is available and payment is made.

I wonder if the real girl in the photo knows her picture is being passed around. it would really suck if the real person tried to really rent a place and the landlord saw her photo from Craigslist scams. The ad on craigslist will be at end soonest and as I happily will have roommate. I too want to avoid incontinence.
Sundays are good for me to come get you from airport. When will you arrive? The closest one is 1 hour from my address.
I am happy to have such a beautiful roommate as outer beauty is much more important to me, as an American, then inner honesty and wisdom.
As soon as I am at my personal computer I will send my photo as I know how important my looks are for renting a room to you.

ReplyDeleteProbably nothing to be worried about. Most of these scams involve mailing phony checks over the amount requested and then having the recipient send them the overage in real money. Just ignore any other contact.

However, as soon as she/he started asking me to deposit money ("she" sent a check to my house) and send a Western Union wire, I got suspicious and googled "her" because everything seemed really fast and too trusting. I also received calls all day from a BLOCKED number and an email from "her" threatening to go to the FBI, which is ridiculous since I have not attempted to cash the check and I have reported all of this to every person/office/organization I can think of. I am not surprised, I just wish we weren't constantly having to watch our backs all the time :( oh well, just glad I caught on! Thank you for creating this blog!

I received emails from lindascott562@gmail.com and then started reviving them from lindascott6754@yahoo.com. I didn't notice anyone having the 2nd one in the list do I'm thinking this is a new one this person is using. I aske the bank for verify the funds and they couldn't. The check has a hold on it so I don't have to worry about spending the money. This scammer has made me crazy trying to get her t him whoever to talk to me on the phone. Won't do it. I told her she can't move in and she completely disregarded my email and said she's still coming and the movers will be here to deliver her things. Sent me $3000.00 wanting me to give $2000 to the movers when they show up. Wow!!! I told her if anyone shows up at my house the police will be called. She emailed me her aleged adress and i Already called the police in St Albans Vermont told me nobody by the name of Linda Scott lives at 85 Fairfield st. St Albans Vermont. I am fearful of someone coming to my house however I do have two pit bulls and an alarm system. Just freaks me out!!!

ReplyDeleteThese scammers make me crazy. I doubt anyone will show up at your house, though. There's no way these people could manage to have people showing up all over the USA. I'm having new issues with people who have local phone numbers. On four occasions, I've communicated with people who say they are coming to purchase an item I have for Craigslist. But they never show up. I honestly don't know what they would need my address for, though. So, I can't figure out if these are just rude people or scammers. But I do check all names and emails before replying.

The scammer clearly thinks I am an idiot as they have threatened to involve the police if I do not give back her money. I responded simply by letting the scammer know that I have already considered involving the FBI.

I recently got so paranoid about all the scammers, that I think I accused a real person of being a scammer. She had strange grammer, was overly excited, and kept telling me she was a "good christian" which made me really suspicious. She wound up telling me she was a 19 year old mother... which could explain the lack of education and the hyper emails. But yeah... It's like I can't trust anyone anymore.

I have thoroughly looked into your background and your internet address and the e-mail below originated in Ghana. I can find no record of you at Southern General Hospital in Glasgow and the U.S. EPA shows no record of offering you a position for chemist or anything else.
If I am wrong please send me an explanation and proof. I also was in the telecom industry and every telephone in Scotland is enablers for international calling. If iI am wrong please respond, if not nice try, better luck finding another sucker.

ReplyDeleteWow! I've not seen a letter such as yours before. It's good to see the scammers are branching out in creativity. Don't worry, though. I doubt they can do anything with that information. Their next step will be to tell you they are sending you a check written for over the agreed upon amount. You are to deposit the check and send them a check back for the overage amount. The check they send you will be phony and you will lose money. So, don't deposit the check. That's if they even get that far.

She claimed her father would be paying her bills, so I responded & requested her father's name, phone number & contact info... and the name of the "university" she would be attending (they might want to pick town with more than one college if they're going to claim to be earning a master's in microbiology! LOL). In response, I rcvd her "father's" email. It is er239923@gmail.com.

For those curious about how these scams work - what happens is they will send you a check for OVER the amount of the purchase or rent. They will then ask you to send them a check for the overage. So, the rent is $400 and they send a check for $500. You then send them a check for $100. But, the check they sent you is phony. And now you are out $100.

The emails all follow the same pattern. First they ask you if the room is still available. Then they will send an email saying, "Let me tell you a little bit about lil ole me." Generally they mention that they are Christian. And, they will ask about parking because they are having their car shipped to the USA. Oh, and they have some sort of humanitarian job or are a nurse, etc.

Responded to their initial inquiry about a room posted for rent and within 1 second they had responded with a page long email including a request for address, full name, cell phone and home number. This is before we had even provided ANY information about the room. They indicated they wanted to forward us a check immediately so as to reserve the room. Sheesh.
